The Art of Salsa Making – Parent Child Workshop

By Valerie Kelly & Stephanie Colette

During National Nutrition Month, Turtle Rock CDC was inspired by the vision of the Wellness Newsletter to provide children, families, and staff a positive attitude toward wellness along with understanding the importance of good nutrition and healthy living. With this vision and to celebrate March as National Nutrition Month, we invited Stephanie Collett, Nutrition and Health Educator, to host a Parent and Child Workshop on March 6th, 2020.  The workshop allowed parents and their children to cook together and prepare a healthy Black Bean and Roasted Corn Salsa.

This unique cooking opportunity allowed parents and their children time to bond as well as encouraged the children’s willingness to try new foods. During the workshop, Ms. Stephanie gave parents a proper handwashing demonstration as well as nutrition facts and cooking tips.

The workshop was a huge success with about 30 parents and children in attendance. We got an overwhelmingly positive response when it came to the salsa from our families. “We loved this delicious salsa and chips,” said the Antaloy family. “Yummy, our kids wouldn’t eat this if an adult made it, but making it themselves has made all the difference. Thanks for including a vegan option,” said the Warner family. “Excellent, I like that we made it ourselves with fresh ingredients and that we could choose the amount.” It was such a great experience for everyone involved!
