Catalyst Kids Alumni Spotlight: A Friendship That Grew from After School Programs

For more than 50 years, Catalyst Kids has offered quality child care in California, nurturing infants through 8th graders with enriching programs that go far beyond the classroom. With over 150 centers across the state, our impact is seen not just in early education, but in the lifelong friendships and confidence we help build. 

In this alumni spotlight, we’re proud to feature Amanda Tran and Kenna Valdez, two former Catalyst Kids alumni whose friendship began over 25 years ago at our Parkview center in San Jose.

 

 

Where Childhood Memories Are Made 

Kenna Valdez remembers Catalyst Kids as a safe, creative space that opened doors to new experiences:
“I loved the field trips and activities, things I wouldn’t have had access to otherwise,” she says. The program offered both summer and after school care, providing her with fun, learning, and friendships. 

Amanda Tran, who joined Catalyst Kids in first grade, reflects on how vital it was during a transitional time:
“I was new to school and shy. The after school environment gave me a comforting way to meet kids and feel accepted.” 

 

 

How After School Programs Spark Lifelong Friendships 

It was at Catalyst Kids that Amanda and Kenna first met, a bond that might not have formed otherwise.
“Our parents worked a lot, and we wouldn’t have had playdates. Catalyst Kids gave us time together,” Amanda says.
“It really was the site of our friendship,” Kenna adds. 

Even though they were in different grades, the program encouraged connections across age groups, teaching inclusivity and empathy early on. 

 

 

Experiences That Inspire a Lifetime 

Kenna recalls caring for classroom pets like Shadow the bunny and Pinky the snake, moments that brought joy and responsibility. Amanda’s memories include staff-led rap sessions and hands-on art projects, which ignited her lifelong love of creativity.
